About this opening

Kalyon Holding is hiring a Tunnel Design Manager in Abu Dhabi to lead the engineering team's technical position on tunnel design for a major rail project. The manager reviews lining and ground support design, checks that the tunnelling method can actually be built, and coordinates the tunnel work with the geotechnical, structures and ventilation teams.

What the role involves

  • Manage the senior tunnel design engineers and own the engineering team's technical position on tunnel design
  • Review tunnel lining design, ground support systems and excavation sequencing against ITA/BTS guidance and Eurocode 7
  • Assess whether the TBM/NATM tunnelling method, shaft arrangements and cross-passage design can be built as drawn
  • Approve tunnel design review comments and technical query responses before they are issued
  • Coordinate tunnel interfaces with the geotechnical, structures, ventilation and system assurance disciplines
  • Chair tunnel design coordination meetings with the client and track the design programme against excavation sequencing
  • Escalate ground risk, settlement or safety-critical design issues, and oversee assessment of design changes and ground condition variations
  • Support review of the monitoring and instrumentation strategy for the tunnelling works

Requirements noted by the boards

  • Bachelor's degree in civil, geotechnical or tunnelling engineering from an accredited university; a master's degree is preferred
  • Chartered Engineer status (ICE or equivalent); British Tunnelling Society membership is an advantage
  • Minimum 12-15 years of tunnelling engineering experience, including design or design-review management of bored or NATM tunnels, on a high-speed rail or metro project of similar scale
  • Working knowledge of Eurocode 7, ITA/BTS guidelines, ground support and lining design, TBM/NATM methods and ground movement and settlement assessment
  • Fluent written and spoken English is mandatory; Arabic is an advantage
  • Able to chair technical meetings, negotiate design positions and produce reports and presentations ready for the client
