Salary by segment — the part most websites hide
A single "average salary" for this job would mislead you. In Oman the word driver covers differently-paid jobs — light-vehicle and company drivers on a fixed monthly salary, delivery drivers on a basic that can mix with per-order incentives, and taxi, bus and heavy-vehicle drivers on higher bands that need the matching licence category — so the segments below separate them by vehicle and licence. Overtime, commission and trip allowances are NOT included in any figure on this page — treat them as a variable extra on top of the salary in your contract:
| Segment | Monthly salary | Note |
|---|---|---|
| New arrival — light-vehicle, company and delivery offers | OMR 180 – 300 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the cronosaction role table puts light duty drivers at OMR 180–280 basic and delivery riders at OMR 150–230 basic (per-order incentives sit on top, never in the fixed figure), and the radiocut Gulf 2026 guide puts entry light-driver offers at OMR 150–250. The headline band is where those ordinary light-vehicle offers overlap — judge a new-arrival offer against this band, not against taxi or heavy figures |
| Experienced — taxi, bus and heavy vehicle offers | OMR 300 – 450 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: jobservicehub’s October 2026 taxi guide puts taxi drivers at OMR 300–500 (tips and commission on top, never counted in the figure), cronosaction puts bus drivers at OMR 240–370 and heavy truck drivers at OMR 280–420, and jobservicehub’s trucking guide puts entry-level truck drivers at OMR 300–400. Heavy work needs the matching Royal Oman Police heavy licence category; a home-country licence alone is not enough |
| Premium — trailer, tanker and specialized heavy offers | OMR 350 – 550 / month, top around OMR 700 | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: cronosaction puts trailer drivers at OMR 320–480 and tanker drivers at OMR 350–550 (remote site and night allowances on top of the basic), and jobservicehub’s trucking guide puts heavy truck drivers at OMR 500–700, noting experienced drivers on specialized vehicles can pass OMR 700. These are experienced-licence bands — plan your first contract on the band for the licence you actually hold |
| Market figure, all experience levels | ~OMR 330 / month average (reported range OMR 228 – 492) | Employee-reported light driver pay from the radiocut Gulf 2026 guide — includes experienced drivers and premium employers, so do not expect it as a first offer. A second, higher survey band (Paylab’s ‘car driver’ figures, roughly OMR 600–1,500 in dinar terms) sits far above every current guide we reviewed and mixes professional categories — see the questions below |
What the job involves
Driving cars, pickups and vans for companies, shops, restaurants and delivery networks — staff and document runs, goods and food delivery on set routes, and airport and errand driving; taxi driving in Muscat and other cities on the passenger-vehicle licence; and, on a heavy licence, trucks, trailers, tankers and staff buses for logistics, construction and oil-field contractors. Daily vehicle checks, keeping the vehicle clean and fuelled, route planning around Muscat traffic and long inter-city runs, delivery paperwork, and safe, legal driving in extreme summer heat are part of every version of the job.
What your total package usually includes
For drivers in Oman, the package usually comes down to accommodation and whether the vehicle, fuel and licence costs are the company's problem or yours — city roles and interior postings look very different on these lines, and the table below shows why:
| Part of the package | What it usually means in practice |
|---|---|
| Housing | Shared accommodation is standard at entry level. Some employers give a housing allowance instead — a room and cash are not worth the same, so ask which one your offer includes. |
| Transport | Company transport to the site is common on project work. City jobs may give a transport allowance, or nothing at all — and if it is nothing, that cost comes out of your salary. |
| Overtime | Paid on top of basic when hours run long. Get the rate — and how the hours are counted — in writing. "Overtime available" with no rate attached means very little. |
| Medical | Employer-provided health insurance, arranged as part of the job. You should receive the insurance card — not have to chase anyone for it. |
| Air ticket | A return ticket home every 1–2 years is standard in most contracts. Check the interval, and whether it covers family (at this level, it usually covers you only). |
Count these before you judge any offer. A slightly lower salary with housing, transport and overtime paid can leave you with more in savings at month's end than a higher headline figure without them.
On an Oman driver offer, confirm in writing: accommodation provided or an allowance (or camp living on interior and oil-field postings), who pays for fuel and vehicle maintenance (on a company role it should be the employer), how overtime and any commission or trip allowances are calculated, and who pays for your Omani licence if you do not hold one yet — those answers are worth more than a small difference in the basic figure.
How pay is structured for drivers in Oman
Most company and light-vehicle driving in Oman is a fixed monthly salary, with overtime on top at a premium rate when shifts run long — get the overtime rate and how hours are counted into the contract, because long days are normal in transport and delivery work. Two parts of the market work differently. Taxi work often mixes a smaller fixed salary with commission on fares, so a quiet month pays less than a busy one — ask for the fixed-versus-commission split in writing before you judge the headline figure. Delivery work can add per-order or per-trip incentives on top of a basic — the same rule applies: the guaranteed part is the salary, everything else is variable. Heavy, trailer and tanker work sometimes adds trip or remote-site allowances; those belong in the contract too, not in a verbal promise. Oman has no personal income tax on salaries, so the figure in your contract is the figure you take home.
Where driver jobs are concentrated in Oman
Muscat holds most of the driving work — company fleets, hotels, delivery networks, taxi fleets and the port and industrial areas around Sohar-linked logistics. Sohar and Salalah add port, free-zone and logistics driving, Nizwa and the interior add construction and services driving, and Duqm adds project and industrial driving tied to the port and special economic zone. The highest total packages are on the interior oil fields, where tanker and heavy drivers work rotation schedules with camp living — the extra pay is compensation for isolation and long duty stretches. Project and logistics hiring rises and falls with contracts, so a heavy-driver demand should always be checked as currently live before you pay anyone anything.
How to get this job safely
1. Apply to the company directly, or go through a licensed Overseas Employment Promoter — nobody else. 2. Before you pay a single rupee, verify the agent's licence and check the job has a Permission Tracking Number (the guide below shows how). 3. Get the salary, the overtime rate and the accommodation written into the contract — a verbal promise made in an agent's office tends to disappear at the airport. 4. Never hand your original passport to an unlicensed person, and never travel for work without the Protector stamp.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some websites say Oman drivers earn OMR 700 or more a month?
Those figures describe the top of the market — tanker, oil-field and specialized heavy drivers — or small-sample surveys that mix professional categories in with ordinary drivers. One survey (Paylab) shows ‘car driver’ figures of roughly OMR 600–1,500 a month in dinar terms, far above every current guide we reviewed for the light-vehicle roles a new arrival is hired into, which cluster at OMR 180–300. The genuine ladder to higher pay is the heavy licence and tanker or oil-field experience — but plan your first contract on the band for the vehicle and licence you actually hold.
Do I need an Omani driving licence to work as a driver in Oman?
For almost every role, yes — every current guide we reviewed requires a valid Omani licence, with a heavy vehicle licence category for trucks, trailers and tankers. A home-country licence alone does not authorize professional driving in Oman; it may be converted or you may need lessons and tests through the Royal Oman Police, depending on the issuing country. Get it in writing who arranges and pays for the licence, and whether the job starts only once it is issued.
Is there a legal minimum wage in Oman?
There is — OMR 325 a month — but it applies to Omani nationals in the private sector, and many expat first contracts for driving work sit below it, which is legal. It is a floor in the law, not a market rate: none of the bands on this page are derived from it, so judge an offer against the advertised band for your role, not against the legal floor.
Is accommodation included for drivers in Oman?
Often, yes — especially on project, logistics and interior work, where employers commonly provide shared or camp accommodation, and the higher heavy-vehicle bands are usually tied to remote postings with camp living, food and long rotations. City company roles vary more: some include housing, some pay an allowance, some provide neither. A higher basic without accommodation can be worth less than a lower one with camp living — confirm each part in writing before you compare offers.
Can expatriates get driver jobs in Oman, or is the job reserved for Omanis?
Driving is not reserved for Omani nationals — the current guides we reviewed describe employer-sponsored work residence permits for foreign drivers as standard practice, valid for two years and renewable. Oman does run Omanisation nationalisation targets, so Omani applicants get hiring priority in transport and logistics hiring — but it is priority, not a reservation, and expat drivers continue to be hired widely. Never pay anyone for a visa: the employer applies for the permit in your name, and anyone selling you a visa outside that process is running a scam.
