Who comes to Oman from Pakistan β and for what work
Omanβs Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi workforce is concentrated in driving (company, delivery, taxi and heavy work), construction and contracting, hospitality, restaurants and retail, logistics, ports and warehousing, and the oil and gas field contractor ecosystem in the interior, where energy projects employ tanker and heavy drivers, technicians and trades through contracting companies. As in the bigger Gulf states, the route in matters: a direct employer with its own workforce generally offers clearer terms than a manpower supplier placing workers with clients, and the full written package β not the headline salary β decides what you actually keep.
The work-permit route β Ministry of Labour and the Royal Oman Police
Work permits in Oman are approved by the Ministry of Labour, with the work residence visa then issued by the Royal Oman Police. The employer applies for the permit before you travel β a genuine Oman job starts with the employer arranging the labour clearance and work visa in your name, followed by a medical examination and fingerprinting after arrival. A valid Omani driving licence β the right category for the vehicle β is effectively part of the permit picture for driving work, because the occupation on the visa must match the job. Workers coming from Pakistan use the same legal route as for any Gulf country: a licensed Overseas Employment Promoter, the demand checked on the BEOE portal, and the Protector of Emigrants stamp before departure β the full steps are in our agent-verification guide. Anyone offering to sell you an Oman visa outside the employerβs application is running the same scam pattern as elsewhere in the Gulf.
How an Oman pay package usually works
A typical company offer combines a basic salary with shared or camp accommodation provided (standard on driving, project and industrial work) or a housing allowance, plus medical cover arranged by the employer and a return air ticket at contract intervals. Oman has no personal income tax on salaries β the figure in your contract is the figure you take home β and the labour law provides an end-of-service gratuity tied to basic salary and length of service, so the basic-versus-allowance split in your written offer matters well beyond the monthly pay. The legal minimum wage is OMR 325 a month for Omani nationals: a floor in the law, not a market rate. Because the rial is so strong β one rial is about US$2.60 β small rial differences are large money at home: OMR 20 a month is about Rs 14,400, so the provided parts of the package (room, food, vehicle and fuel on driving roles) deserve the same attention as the salary figure itself.
Living costs and sending money home
For workers whose accommodation is provided, personal spending is mainly food (where not provided), mobile and small daily costs, and most of the salary can go home through banks and licensed exchange houses β keep the receipts for every transfer. Workers paying their own rent in Muscat face Gulf capital-city prices in a strong currency, so an offer without housing needs a clearly higher salary to be worth the same. Interior and oil-field postings with camp living are where the real savings happen: room, food and transport are provided, and there is little to spend on between rotations.
Your rights β the official place to check
Omanβs Ministry of Labour is the authority for work permits, wage complaints and worker services β its guidance is the official reference for permit rules and Omanisation requirements. Keep copies of your contract, work visa and payslips at all times. If pay stops, arrives short, or a different contract is substituted on arrival, raise it with the Ministry of Labour in writing β and keep the bank records, because wages paid through the banking system leave exactly the paper trail a complaint needs.
What to verify before travelling to Oman
Your contract salary and allowances in writing, the Ministry of Labour permit in your name, who pays for accommodation, food and the Omani driving licence if the role needs one, and β for heavy roles β the licence category on the permit matching the vehicle you will actually drive. Workers coming from Pakistan should use the same safety checks as for any Gulf country: licensed agent only, verify the job, never pay above the official cap.
