Salary by segment — the part most websites hide
A single "average salary" for this job would mislead you. Steel-fixer pay is decided mainly by the grade you can prove in a practical test — a helper who carries bars is not paid as a fixer, and a fixer who can read a bar bending schedule (BBS) and pass a pre-pour inspection is not paid as a chargehand. Overtime is NOT included in any figure on this page — treat it as a variable extra on top of the basic in your contract, and note that overtime spikes before concrete pours:
| Segment | Monthly salary | Note |
|---|---|---|
| New arrival — skilled steel fixer offers | SAR 1,500 – 2,200 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the innovativewizards guide puts a skilled fixer (2–4 years) at SAR 1,500–2,000, and the suntiros 2026 guide puts a junior fixer at SAR 1,700–2,200 — the headline band is where those two skilled new-arrival bands overlap. Helpers sit below it (SAR 1,200–1,700 across the two guides) and are not fixer pay, however the job is advertised |
| Experienced — senior fixer, bar bender and cage fabricator | SAR 2,000 – 3,400 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the innovativewizards guide puts a senior fixer (4–6 years) at SAR 2,000–2,500, and the suntiros 2026 guide puts a senior fixer at SAR 2,600–3,400 with cage fabricators at SAR 2,200–2,900 and yard bar benders at SAR 2,000–2,600. The step from ordinary fixing to reading complex drawings, fabricating cages and passing pre-pour inspections is where the premium appears — these are experienced grades, never first offers |
| Foreman and supervisor — gang leaders | SAR 2,500 – 4,800 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the innovativewizards guide puts a foreman (6–8 years) at SAR 2,500–3,200 and a supervisor (8+ years) at SAR 3,200–4,000, while the suntiros 2026 guide puts a foreman at SAR 3,400–4,800. A chargehand leads a rebar gang, checks quantities against the BBS and prepares areas for inspection — that responsibility, not years alone, is what the top band pays for |
What the job involves
Reading structural drawings and bar bending schedules (BBS) and checking bar marks, diameters, lengths and shapes against them; cutting steel bars to length and bending them into stirrups, links, hooks and cranks; placing and tying reinforcement in footings and rafts, columns, walls, beams and slabs, including starter bars, couplers and extra bars at supports; fitting cover blocks and chairs so the concrete cover stays correct; pre-assembling column, pile and beam cages at ground level for lifting into place; assisting engineers during pre-pour inspections and correcting missing or misplaced bars; and keeping the rebar yard organised with bundles correctly tagged. The work is heavy, outdoors and done in large gangs — speed, accuracy and a clean safety record decide who moves up a grade.
What your total package usually includes
For steel fixers, the package usually comes down to camp accommodation, site transport, overtime before pours and food — the table below shows what each part normally means in this trade:
| Part of the package | What it usually means in practice |
|---|---|
| Housing | Shared accommodation is standard at entry level. Some employers give a housing allowance instead — a room and cash are not worth the same, so ask which one your offer includes. |
| Transport | Company transport to the site is common on project work. City jobs may give a transport allowance, or nothing at all — and if it is nothing, that cost comes out of your salary. |
| Overtime | Paid on top of basic when hours run long. Get the rate — and how the hours are counted — in writing. "Overtime available" with no rate attached means very little. |
| Medical | Employer-provided health insurance, arranged as part of the job. You should receive the insurance card — not have to chase anyone for it. |
| Air ticket | A return ticket home every 1–2 years is standard in most contracts. Check the interval, and whether it covers family (at this level, it usually covers you only). |
Count these before you judge any offer. A slightly lower salary with housing, transport and overtime paid can leave you with more in savings at month's end than a higher headline figure without them.
On a steel-fixer offer, confirm in writing: accommodation provided or an allowance (camp living is the norm on project work), how overtime is counted and paid (the Labour Law rate is basic hourly plus 50 percent, and pour weeks are when the hours appear), whether food or a food allowance is included, and whether the job title on the contract and work permit says steel fixer — a helper title at fixer pay, or the reverse, follows you to the next job.
How pay is structured for steel fixers
Steel fixers are paid a fixed monthly basic salary through the Wage Protection System, with overtime on top at basic hourly rate plus 50 percent when shifts run long — overtime is commonest in the days before a concrete pour, when gangs work to finish the reinforcement, and quieter between pours, so a busy month is not the salary. Some contractors add a project or site allowance for remote giga-project sites; count it only when it is written into the contract. Judge every offer on its written basic first — the basic (not the total) is what the end-of-service gratuity is calculated on.
Where steel-fixer jobs are concentrated
Riyadh is the biggest single market — the King Salman International Stadium, King Salman Park, Diriyah and the metro and housing programmes all run on reinforced concrete — with the NEOM, Red Sea and Qiddiya giga-projects as the next tier of demand and Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah hiring steadily for housing, hospitals and pilgrim infrastructure. Jubail and Yanbu add industrial-plant work, and Dammam and the Eastern Province cover oil-and-gas and industrial construction. Contractors and manpower suppliers recruit in batches year-round; the big employers themselves hire more selectively.
How to get this job safely
1. Apply to the company directly, or go through a licensed Overseas Employment Promoter — nobody else. 2. Before you pay a single rupee, verify the agent's licence and check the job has a Permission Tracking Number (the guide below shows how). 3. Get the salary, the overtime rate and the accommodation written into the contract — a verbal promise made in an agent's office tends to disappear at the airport. 4. Never hand your original passport to an unlicensed person, and never travel for work without the Protector stamp.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some websites say Saudi steel fixers earn SAR 4,500 or more a month?
Those figures describe the top of the market — or an average that mixes it in. One 2026 construction guide puts steel fixers at SAR 2,500–4,500, and the suntiros 2026 guide puts a foreman at SAR 3,400–4,800 — but both of those are senior and foreman grades, not first offers. The two grade tables reviewed for this page put a skilled new-arrival fixer at SAR 1,500–2,200. Plan your first contract on the band for the grade you can actually prove in a trade test.
Why do other guides quote steel fixers as low as SAR 1,050 a month?
That low figure comes from a general construction-jobs guide that lumps entry helpers in with fixers — it puts a steel fixer at SAR 1,050–1,400 alongside a construction helper at SAR 1,000–1,350. The two detailed grade tables reviewed for this page both put helpers at SAR 1,200–1,700 and skilled fixers clearly above them. If an offer calls you a steel fixer but pays helper money, check the job title on the contract — the title on the work permit is what your pay and your next job will be judged on.
Do I need a trade test or certificate to work as a steel fixer in Saudi Arabia?
Expect a practical test. Steel fixing is treated as a skilled occupation, and the Skill Verification Program (SVP), run by Takamol for the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, may be required depending on your nationality and occupation — the 2026 guide reviewed for this page says the assessment may include reading a simple drawing, cutting and bending bars and tying a small cage correctly. An ITI or trade certificate helps, but the test result is what sets your grade and your rate. Practise drawing-reading and tying before the test, not after.
Is steel-fixer work open to expatriates, or is it Saudized?
It is open to expatriates and is one of the most common skilled trades recruited from South Asia for Saudi construction. The 2026 guide reviewed for this page states that contractors and manpower suppliers recruit foreign steel fixers through licensed agencies, that the employer arranges the work visa, and that the Iqama is issued in the employer's name. No Saudization reservation for steel fixing was found in the sources reviewed. Never pay anyone for a visa: the employer applies for the permit in your name.
How can I earn more as a steel fixer?
Move up a grade, and prove it. The guides reviewed are explicit: the ladder is helper → fixer → senior fixer → chargehand/foreman, and each step needs a skill you can show — BBS reading, cage fabrication, yard machine work, and passing pre-pour inspections without defects. Speed and accuracy in tying matter on every grade, and Gulf project experience raises offers at the next contract. A fixer who can run a small gang and check quantities against the schedule is on the path to foreman pay, which is where the band steps up again.
