Salary by segment — the part most websites hide
A single “average salary” for this job would mislead you. Painter pay is decided mainly by the finish you can prove — a helper who sands and masks is not paid as a painter, a painter who can only roll emulsion on a villa wall is not paid as a spray painter, and neither is paid as an industrial coating painter who works to a specification. Overtime is NOT included in any figure on this page — treat it as a variable extra on top of the basic in your contract:
| Segment | Monthly salary | Note |
|---|---|---|
| New arrival — general painter offers | SAR 1,700 – 2,200 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the news91media guide puts a general painter at SAR 1,600–2,200, and the cronosaction guide puts a general painter at SAR 1,700–2,500 — the headline band is where those two general-painter bands overlap. Helpers sit below it (SAR 1,200–1,700 across the two guides) and are not painter pay, however the job is advertised |
| Experienced — skilled finishing and spray painter | SAR 2,000 – 3,000 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the news91media guide puts a skilled/finishing painter at SAR 2,000–2,700 and a spray painter at SAR 2,200–3,000, and the cronosaction guide puts a spray painter at SAR 2,000–3,500+ and an experienced painter at SAR 2,200–3,500. The step from rolling walls to clean putty and skim work, straight lines, high-gloss and spray finishing is where the premium appears — these are experienced grades, never first offers |
| Specialist — industrial coating and decorative painter | SAR 2,500 – 4,000 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: BOTH guides put industrial/protective coating painters at SAR 2,500–4,000 and decorative/finishing painters at SAR 2,500–4,000. Industrial work — blasting, epoxy and polyurethane systems, film thickness measured to a specification — is the best-paid painting work in the Kingdom and the hardest to enter; decorative work for hotels and luxury homes pays the same band for a different skill. Foremen sit in a similar range (SAR 2,500–3,500 in one guide, SAR 3,000–5,000+ in the other) and are paid for running a gang, not for painting alone |
What the job involves
Preparing surfaces — sanding, filling, masking and cleaning, which is most of the job and where most coating failures start; mixing paint to the required colour and consistency; applying primer, emulsion and finish coats by brush, roller and spray gun to walls, ceilings, doors, joinery and metal surfaces; putty, skim and gypsum finishing for a flat, defect-free surface; decorative finishes where specified — textures, stucco, marble effect and wallpaper; protecting floors, windows, furniture and fixtures from paint; cleaning and maintaining brushes, rollers and spray equipment; and, on industrial work, blasting and applying protective coating systems to steel, tanks and pipelines to a written specification with film thickness checked. The work is done on scaffolding and ladders, often outdoors, and rework after a snag list is a normal part of the trade.
What your total package usually includes
For painters, the package usually comes down to camp accommodation, site transport, overtime in finishing weeks and food — the table below shows what each part normally means in this trade:
| Part of the package | What it usually means in practice |
|---|---|
| Housing | Shared accommodation is standard at entry level. Some employers give a housing allowance instead — a room and cash are not worth the same, so ask which one your offer includes. |
| Transport | Company transport to the site is common on project work. City jobs may give a transport allowance, or nothing at all — and if it is nothing, that cost comes out of your salary. |
| Overtime | Paid on top of basic when hours run long. Get the rate — and how the hours are counted — in writing. "Overtime available" with no rate attached means very little. |
| Medical | Employer-provided health insurance, arranged as part of the job. You should receive the insurance card — not have to chase anyone for it. |
| Air ticket | A return ticket home every 1–2 years is standard in most contracts. Check the interval, and whether it covers family (at this level, it usually covers you only). |
Count these before you judge any offer. A slightly lower salary with housing, transport and overtime paid can leave you with more in savings at month's end than a higher headline figure without them.
On a painter offer, confirm in writing: accommodation provided or an allowance (camp living is the norm on project work), how overtime is counted and paid (the Labour Law rate is basic hourly plus 50 percent, and finishing weeks are when the hours appear), whether food or a food allowance is included, and whether the job title on the contract and work permit says painter — a helper title at painter pay, or the reverse, follows you to the next job.
How pay is structured for painters
Painters are paid a fixed monthly basic salary through the Wage Protection System, with overtime on top at basic hourly rate plus 50 percent when shifts run long — overtime is commonest in finishing weeks, when gangs work to hand a building over, and quieter between projects, so a busy month is not the salary. The figures on this page are basic only: accommodation, food and transport are normally separate, and a lower basic with all three provided can be worth more than a higher basic without them. Judge every offer on its written basic first — the basic (not the total) is what the end-of-service gratuity is calculated on.
Where painter jobs are concentrated
Riyadh is the biggest single market — Diriyah, the Expo 2030 site, King Salman International Airport and Qiddiya all need finishing trades at scale — with Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah hiring steadily for hotels, pilgrim accommodation and maintenance painting. Jubail and Yanbu hold the best-paid industrial coating work around refineries and petrochemical plants, Dammam and the Eastern Province add industrial maintenance and shutdown work, and facility-management painting in compounds, malls and hospitals is the steadier, better-housed route everywhere. Contractors hire in batches for project finishes; facility managers hire permanently for maintenance.
How to get this job safely
1. Apply to the company directly, or go through a licensed Overseas Employment Promoter — nobody else. 2. Before you pay a single rupee, verify the agent's licence and check the job has a Permission Tracking Number (the guide below shows how). 3. Get the salary, the overtime rate and the accommodation written into the contract — a verbal promise made in an agent's office tends to disappear at the airport. 4. Never hand your original passport to an unlicensed person, and never travel for work without the Protector stamp.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some websites say Saudi painters earn SAR 6,000 or more a month?
Those figures are modelled averages, not contractor offers. The news91media guide reviewed for this page says it plainly: salary-comparison sites quoting SAR 6,000 to SAR 9,000 blend office salaries and Western expatriate packages into the same average as site labour, producing a number no painter has ever been offered. The modelled figures found in the search results this run — around SAR 6,400 a month for a construction painter and around SAR 9,000 for a painter-decorator — are the same kind of model. The two detailed grade tables reviewed for this page put a skilled new-arrival painter at SAR 1,700–2,200. Plan your first contract on the band for the grade you can actually prove.
Is painter work open to expatriates, or is it Saudized?
It is open to expatriates. The news91media guide states that painting is still fully open to expatriate workers and is not on any 2026 Saudization list — the closed roles it names are security guards, receptionists, storekeepers, call-centre agents and sales staff, not manual trades. What matters legally is the profession on your iqama: it should say painter (or a matching painting profession), and if it says something unrelated, ask your employer to process a profession change — the fee is legally the employer’s under Labour Law Article 40. Never pay anyone for a visa: the employer applies for the permit in your name.
Do I need a trade test to work as a painter in Saudi Arabia?
Expect one. Painting is a listed trade under the Skill Verification Programme, run by Takamol for the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development — the guide reviewed for this page describes a practical test, theory plus hands-on work, with an in-country track for workers already employed in the Kingdom. No diploma is required; what is tested is finish quality — surface preparation, clean edges and straight lines, and spray-gun work where claimed. Keep photographs of your own finished work: a phone full of clean edges and sprayed doors out-interviews years claimed with nothing to show.
What about the summer heat rules for outdoor painters?
From 15 June to 15 September, outdoor work in direct sunlight is prohibited between 12:00 and 15:00 across the private sector, enforced with a SAR 3,000 penalty per worker found in breach. In practice the site day splits — roughly early morning to late morning, then mid-afternoon to evening — and indoor finishing work continues normally. If a supervisor asks you to work outdoors during the ban, the employer is breaking the law, and the violation can be reported on 19911. Overtime is paid at basic hourly rate plus 50 percent when hours run long.
How can I earn more as a painter?
Learn the spray gun first. The guides reviewed agree it is the single fastest pay increase available to a general painter — spray work is faster, cleaner and priced higher, and the skill is learnable on site if you ask to be trained. After that, the routes diverge: industrial coating (specification reading, blasting, film-thickness measurement) takes you into the oil, gas and petrochemical supply chain, where contracts are longer and pay is the top band on this page; decorative finishing takes you into hotels and luxury homes at the same band. Either way, the gate is proven finish quality, not years claimed.
