Salary by segment — the part most websites hide
A single “average salary” for this job would mislead you, because “fitter” covers three different kinds of work. A fabrication-yard fitter who cuts and fits steel for welding is not paid as a pipe fitter who fits spools to a drawing in a plant, and neither is paid as a maintenance fitter who keeps running machinery aligned and working. Overtime is NOT included in any figure on this page — treat it as a variable extra on top of the basic in your contract, and note that shutdown and plant work is where the overtime hours actually appear:
| Segment | Monthly salary | Note |
|---|---|---|
| New arrival — skilled fitter offers | SAR 2,500 – 3,200 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the gig.asokamission Gulf guide puts a Fabricator / Fitter in Saudi Arabia at SAR 1,800–3,200, and the futuregotech steel guide puts a Welder / Fitter at SAR 2,500–6,000 — the headline band is where those two general-fitter bands overlap. Helpers sit below it (the futuregotech guide puts a steel plant helper at SAR 1,500–2,800) and are not fitter pay, however the job is advertised |
| Experienced — pipe and structural fitter | SAR 2,800 – 4,500 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the futuregotech steel guide puts a Pipe Fitter / Structural Fitter at SAR 2,800–6,000, and the oil & gas guide from the first site puts a Welder / Pipe Fitter at SAR 2,000–4,500 — the segment band is where those two pipe-fitting bands overlap. This is the grade that reads spool and isometric drawings, fits flanges and valves, and passes pressure tests; it is an experienced grade, never a first offer |
| Specialist — steel plant and shutdown fitter, up to | SAR 6,000 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: SAR 6,000 is the top end of BOTH futuregotech fitter bands — Welder / Fitter SAR 2,500–6,000 and Pipe Fitter / Structural Fitter SAR 2,800–6,000. The top of the range belongs to fitters on plant, shutdown and turnaround work with approved trade tests and a clean safety record, where overtime and shift allowances sit on top of the basic — it is not a figure to plan a first contract on |
What the job involves
Reading engineering, spool and isometric drawings and checking dimensions, materials and tolerances against them; cutting, grinding and preparing steel plate and pipe to the drawing; fitting and aligning structural steel, pipe spools, flanges, valves and supports so welders can join them without forcing; bolting up flanged joints to the correct torque and checking alignment with levels, squares and measuring tools; on maintenance work, dismantling pumps, compressors and rotating equipment, replacing bearings, seals and couplings, and reassembling and aligning them so they run without vibration; and working to a permit system in plants and yards — hot work, confined space and lifting permits are a daily part of the job, not paperwork for someone else. The work is physical, often outdoors or in hot plant areas, and done in crews where a wrong measurement stops the next trade.
What your total package usually includes
For fitters, the package usually comes down to camp accommodation, site transport, overtime and shift allowances on plant work — the table below shows what each part normally means in this trade:
| Part of the package | What it usually means in practice |
|---|---|
| Housing | Shared accommodation is standard at entry level. Some employers give a housing allowance instead — a room and cash are not worth the same, so ask which one your offer includes. |
| Transport | Company transport to the site is common on project work. City jobs may give a transport allowance, or nothing at all — and if it is nothing, that cost comes out of your salary. |
| Overtime | Paid on top of basic when hours run long. Get the rate — and how the hours are counted — in writing. "Overtime available" with no rate attached means very little. |
| Medical | Employer-provided health insurance, arranged as part of the job. You should receive the insurance card — not have to chase anyone for it. |
| Air ticket | A return ticket home every 1–2 years is standard in most contracts. Check the interval, and whether it covers family (at this level, it usually covers you only). |
Count these before you judge any offer. A slightly lower salary with housing, transport and overtime paid can leave you with more in savings at month's end than a higher headline figure without them.
On a fitter offer, confirm in writing: accommodation provided or an allowance (camp living is the norm on plant and project work), how overtime and night-shift allowances are counted and paid (shutdown work is where the hours appear), whether food or a food allowance is included, and whether the job title on the contract and work permit says fitter — a helper title at fitter pay, or the reverse, follows you to the next job.
How pay is structured for fitters
Fitters are paid a fixed monthly basic salary through the Wage Protection System, with overtime on top when shifts run long and shift allowances on plant and shutdown work — get both rates into the contract, because a busy shutdown month is not the salary. The figures on this page are basic only: accommodation, food and transport are normally separate, and a lower basic with all three provided can be worth more than a higher basic without them. Judge every offer on its written basic first — the basic (not the total) is what the end-of-service gratuity is calculated on.
Where fitter jobs are concentrated
Jubail is the biggest single market — steel plants, petrochemical plants and fabrication yards — with Dammam and the Eastern Province industrial corridor close behind for plant maintenance and fabrication work. Yanbu holds steel and refinery support work on the west coast, Riyadh adds construction-driven fabrication and steel demand, and Jeddah adds port and industrial work. Steel and plant employers hire in batches for projects and shutdowns; maintenance contractors hire steadily for running plants.
How to get this job safely
1. Apply to the company directly, or go through a licensed Overseas Employment Promoter — nobody else. 2. Before you pay a single rupee, verify the agent's licence and check the job has a Permission Tracking Number (the guide below shows how). 3. Get the salary, the overtime rate and the accommodation written into the contract — a verbal promise made in an agent's office tends to disappear at the airport. 4. Never hand your original passport to an unlicensed person, and never travel for work without the Protector stamp.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some websites say Saudi fitters earn SAR 15,000 a month?
Those figures describe a different job with a similar name. The salary-model sites found in the search results this run quote around SAR 4,181 a month for a ‘Fitter and Turner’ — lathe and machine-shop work, not site fitting — and around SAR 15,025 a month for a ‘Mechanical Fitter Engineer’, a degree-level engineering role. Neither is a contractor fitter offer. The two detailed grade guides reviewed for this page put a skilled new-arrival fitter at SAR 2,500–3,200, with experienced pipe and structural fitters at SAR 2,800–4,500. Plan your first contract on the band for the fitting work you are actually hired to do.
Is fitter work open to expatriates, or is it Saudized?
It is open to expatriates. The futuregotech steel guide reviewed for this page lists nationalities eligible as ‘All’, with iqama transfer accepted for candidates already in the Kingdom, and describes recruitment through company portals and Gulf job platforms for steel, fabrication and plant employers. No Saudization reservation for fitters was found in the sources reviewed. That does not mean every single listing is open to everyone — a few employer listings are restricted by nationality, and those say so on the listing itself — so read the individual job advertisement before you apply. Never pay anyone for a visa: the employer applies for the permit in your name.
Do I need a trade test to work as a fitter in Saudi Arabia?
Expect one. The futuregotech guide describes selection as a trade/skill test, interview, document verification and medical, and the oil & gas guide from the first site describes the Skill Verification Programme test — theory plus practical skills at approved test centres — for many skilled trades before a Saudi work visa is issued. For a fitter, the practical part is normally drawing-reading, cutting and fitting to a measurement, and alignment work, not a written exam alone. An ITI fitter certificate plus two years of verified experience is the qualification both guides name; keep experience letters and photographs of fitted work ready.
What is the difference between a mechanical fitter, a pipe fitter and a fabricator?
They overlap, and employers use the titles loosely — which is why the job description matters more than the title. A fabricator cuts and fits steel and pipe in a workshop or yard before welding. A pipe fitter fits pipe spools, flanges and valves on site or in a plant, reading spool and isometric drawings. A mechanical (maintenance) fitter dismantles, repairs and aligns running machinery such as pumps and compressors. The pay follows the system, not the word: plant and pipe work pays above general fabrication work, and shutdown work pays above both. Check which of the three the advertisement actually describes before you compare its salary with this page.
How can I earn more as a fitter?
Learn to read drawings properly first. The guides reviewed agree the step from general fitting to pipe and structural fitting — spool drawings, isometric drawings, flange and valve work, pressure testing — is where the pay band moves up, and it is a learnable skill, not a matter of years alone. After that, the routes diverge: plant maintenance (pumps, compressors, alignment and vibration checks) takes you into refinery, petrochemical and power-plant maintenance contracts, and shutdown experience takes you into turnaround work where overtime and shift allowances lift real monthly income well above the basic. Either way, the gate is measured, defect-free fitting work that passes inspection first time.
