Salary by segment — the part most websites hide
A single “average salary” for this job would mislead you, because “auto electrician” covers two different kinds of work. A workshop electrician who traces a wiring fault on a family car is not paid as a dealership diagnostic technician who reads fault codes on a brand-new hybrid, and neither is paid as a foreman who runs the workshop floor. Overtime is NOT included in any figure on this page — treat it as a variable extra on top of the basic in your contract, and note that dealership job-card incentives are also variable, never part of the basic:
| Segment | Monthly salary | Note |
|---|---|---|
| New arrival — skilled auto electrician offers | SAR 2,500 – 3,800 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the cronosaction mechanic guide puts an Auto Electrician at SAR 2,500–4,500 for 3–6 years experience, and the gpgcchampawat mechanic guide puts an Auto Electrician at SAR 2,200–3,800 in workshops and dealerships — the headline band is where those two auto electrician bands overlap. A current fleet vacancy reviewed this run advertised SAR 2,000–2,500 for return candidates, so first offers at small fleet workshops can sit below the headline — the headline is the skilled guide band, not every vacancy |
| Experienced — dealership and diagnostic technician | SAR 2,800 – 4,500 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the bbcnewsmarathi car mechanic guide puts an Auto Electrician at SAR 3,000–4,500, the gpgcchampawat guide puts a diagnostic technician at SAR 3,000–4,500 and a dealership technician at SAR 2,500–4,000, and a current Riyadh vacancy listing reviewed this run advertised SAR 2,800–4,000. This is the grade that reads fault codes, works on brand-specific systems and handles hybrid and electric vehicles — it is an experienced grade, never a first offer |
| Leadership — workshop foreman and supervisor track | SAR 4,500 – 6,500 / month | Documented in current guides reviewed Oct 2026: the bbcnewsmarathi guide puts a workshop foreman at SAR 4,500–6,500, and both mechanic guides put workshop foremen and supervisors at SAR 5,000–8,000 / SAR 4,500–8,000. A foreman runs the floor, allocates job cards and deals with customers — that responsibility, not years alone, is what the top band pays for, and it is a ladder after several Saudi contracts, never a first offer |
What the job involves
Diagnosing electrical faults on cars, SUVs, pickups, trucks and buses — reading fault codes with OBD-II and brand-specific diagnostic scanners, tracing wiring faults with multimeters and test lights, and clearing codes only after the fault is actually fixed; repairing and replacing batteries, starters, alternators, wiring looms, lighting, sensors and control units (ECUs); working on vehicle air-conditioning electrics, central locking, alarms and accessories; road-testing vehicles after repair and updating the job card with what was done; and following workshop safety rules around batteries, airbags and high-voltage systems on hybrids and electric vehicles. The work is done in bays, often on a shift pattern with busy mornings and evenings at dealerships, and a clean diagnostic record — faults fixed first time, not returned — decides who gets the better grades.
What your total package usually includes
For auto electricians, the package usually comes down to accommodation, workshop transport, overtime and dealership incentives — the table below shows what each part normally means in this trade:
| Part of the package | What it usually means in practice |
|---|---|
| Housing | Shared accommodation is standard at entry level. Some employers give a housing allowance instead — a room and cash are not worth the same, so ask which one your offer includes. |
| Transport | Company transport to the site is common on project work. City jobs may give a transport allowance, or nothing at all — and if it is nothing, that cost comes out of your salary. |
| Overtime | Paid on top of basic when hours run long. Get the rate — and how the hours are counted — in writing. "Overtime available" with no rate attached means very little. |
| Medical | Employer-provided health insurance, arranged as part of the job. You should receive the insurance card — not have to chase anyone for it. |
| Air ticket | A return ticket home every 1–2 years is standard in most contracts. Check the interval, and whether it covers family (at this level, it usually covers you only). |
Count these before you judge any offer. A slightly lower salary with housing, transport and overtime paid can leave you with more in savings at month's end than a higher headline figure without them.
On an auto electrician offer, confirm in writing: accommodation provided or an allowance, how overtime is counted and paid (the Labour Law rate is basic hourly plus 50 percent), whether dealership job-card incentives are guaranteed or variable (they are variable — never budget on them as basic), whether food or a food allowance is included, and whether the job title on the contract and work permit says auto electrician — a helper or general mechanic title at auto electrician pay, or the reverse, follows you to the next job.
How pay is structured for auto electricians
Auto electricians are paid a fixed monthly basic salary through the Wage Protection System, with overtime on top at basic hourly rate plus 50 percent when shifts run long — fleet workshops and dealerships both run busy periods where overtime is real income, and quieter periods where it is not, so a busy month is not the salary. Dealerships may add a job-card productivity incentive (SAR 300–1,000 a month in one guide reviewed) — variable pay, never part of the basic, and only worth counting when the scheme is written down. The figures on this page are basic only: accommodation, food and transport are normally separate, and a lower basic with all three provided can be worth more than a higher basic without them. Judge every offer on its written basic first — the basic (not the total) is what the end-of-service gratuity is calculated on.
Where auto electrician jobs are concentrated
Riyadh is the biggest single market — the largest car market in the country, with the most dealerships, rental fleets and quick-service centres, so light vehicle and auto-electrical mechanics find the most openings here. Jeddah adds dealership workshops and large logistics fleets for the western region, Dammam, Khobar and Jubail hold the industrial and fleet heartland — diesel, heavy vehicle and industrial maintenance work from oil, gas and petrochemical contractors — and Yanbu adds refinery and port fleet work. Dealership groups hire steadily in every major city; fleet workshops hire in batches when a fleet expands.
How to get this job safely
1. Apply to the company directly, or go through a licensed Overseas Employment Promoter — nobody else. 2. Before you pay a single rupee, verify the agent's licence and check the job has a Permission Tracking Number (the guide below shows how). 3. Get the salary, the overtime rate and the accommodation written into the contract — a verbal promise made in an agent's office tends to disappear at the airport. 4. Never hand your original passport to an unlicensed person, and never travel for work without the Protector stamp.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some websites say Saudi auto electricians earn SAR 5,260 or even SAR 9,000 a month?
Those figures are survey averages, not contractor offers. The Jooble salary page reviewed this run gives a single average of SAR 5,260 a month based on only 3 salaries — too small a sample to set a band on — and the Paylab survey puts 80 percent of auto electricians at SAR 4,606–9,981, which mixes senior dealership staff, supervisors and all experience levels together. The two detailed mechanic guides reviewed for this page put a skilled auto electrician at SAR 2,500–3,800, with experienced dealership and diagnostic technicians at SAR 2,800–4,500. Plan your first contract on the band for the electrical work you are actually hired to do.
Is auto electrician work open to expatriates, or is it Saudized?
It is open to expatriates. Both mechanic guides reviewed for this page describe recruitment of foreign mechanics from South Asia and elsewhere for dealerships, independent workshops and fleet workshops, and the current vacancy listings reviewed this run — Al Qassim fleet work and a Riyadh dealership-supply role — are openly recruiting overseas candidates. No Saudization reservation for auto electricians was found in the sources reviewed. That does not mean every single listing is open to everyone — a few employer listings are restricted by nationality, and those say so on the listing itself — so read the individual job advertisement before you apply. Never pay anyone for a visa: the employer applies for the permit in your name.
Do I need a trade test to work as an auto electrician in Saudi Arabia?
Expect a practical one. The cronosaction mechanic guide describes Saudi Skill Verification Programme assessments for several mechanic categories — theory plus a practical assessment at an approved test centre before the work visa is issued — and the gpgcchampawat guide describes selection as diagnosing a fault, stripping and rebuilding a component, or using a diagnostic scanner on a live vehicle, followed by a technical interview. For an auto electrician, the practical part is normally fault-finding with a scanner and a multimeter, not a written exam alone. An ITI or diploma in automobile or electrical trades plus two to five years of workshop experience is the qualification the guides name; keep experience letters and a list of the brands and systems you have worked on ready.
What is the difference between an auto electrician, a general electrician and a diagnostic technician?
They work on different systems, and employers pay for the difference. A general (building) electrician wires buildings — cables, sockets, lighting and distribution boards. An auto electrician works on vehicle systems — 12V and 24V wiring, batteries, starters, alternators, sensors, ECUs and vehicle AC electrics. A diagnostic technician is the senior auto-electrical grade: brand-specific scanners, hybrid and electric vehicle systems, and faults that other electricians could not trace. The pay follows that ladder — general workshop electrical work sits in the headline band, diagnostic work sits in the experienced band above it. Check which of the three the advertisement actually describes before you compare its salary with this page.
How can I earn more as an auto electrician?
Learn diagnostics properly first. The guides reviewed agree the step from general auto-electrical repair to diagnostic work — scanner fault-finding, brand-specific systems, hybrid and electric vehicle electrics — is where the pay band moves up, and it is a learnable skill, not a matter of years alone. After that, the routes diverge: dealership brand training takes you into authorised service centres with job-card incentives, and fleet work takes you into large workshops where overtime and shift work lift real monthly income above the basic. Either way, the gate is faults fixed first time, with a clean record on returned jobs.
